Stage Curtains: Common Materials Used and How to Clean Them

· Clothing

Stage curtain backgrounds offer a frame for the entire experience of your stage. Stains, marks, rips and a loss of fire-retardant qualities are the distinct ways in which curtains can lose their quality over a period of time. The good news is, taking care of your stage curtains is not a complicated task and can be achieved easily.

The chief factor involved in taking care of your theater fabrics includes the material they are crafted from. The common materials include the following:

  • Canvas
  • Vinyl
  • Drop Cloth
  • Muslin
  • Plastic
  • Satin
  • Velour

Certain materials are tougher to clean as compared to others and might need particular steps, so you need to understand how the fabric of your curtain will behave.

Canvas and Drop Cloth Curtains

These curtains are highly likely to attract mold, hair and dust. Thorough brushing can help in removing dust and hair and water-resistant treatment spray can be effective in removing mold. You can also choose to remove the curtain hardware for cleaning it out.

Satin or muslin

The fabric muslin is a loosely-woven cotton. It is sheer and lightweight in nature. Satin curtains are generally made of silk with a weave that offer sheen and luster.

Vinyl and plastic curtains

These curtains are pretty easy to clean. They just need to be wiped down every now and then to prevent and mildew and mold from forming. A mild detergent or cleaner and a non-abrasive cloth are great choices for cleaning vinyl and plastic curtains.

Velour

Velour is quite similar to velvet but where velvet is crafted of silk, the fabric velour is generally made from cotton. Synthetic fibers like polyester can also be used in velour. Such materials make the fabric affordable and this is the reason why velour is utilized in huge volume projects like stage curtains. Velour has a classy sheen and a luxurious look.
